The class will begin with a short presentation on the natural cycles happening all around us—from the tides and seasonal changes to the birds, flowers, aquatic life, and even the tiny plankton drifting in the East River. Then, you’ll create your own Phenology Wheel—a visual journal of nature’s patterns. Whether you focus on the seasons, the moon, local wildlife, or weather, this project will deepen your awareness of the natural world, even in an urban setting.
This class is designed for adults, but high school students (ages 14+) are welcome with a parent or guardian present.

Art is 90% practice and 10% technique. In this class, you’ll learn how to build a regular art practice for 2025, focusing on fast-to-do thumbnail sketches. Choose a rhythm that works for you—daily, weekly, or monthly—and create a space to explore, experiment, and even make a few mistakes along the way.
Like the masters who sketched countless ideas in pencil and watercolor before tackling their masterpieces, you’ll develop your own approach through small, intentional pieces. Inspired by the East River and Newtown Creek, we’ll use the sky and water as examples.
For our guided example, you’ll work on a 2 x 2 grid—one sketch a week for a month—using pencil, markers, ink, watercolors, or the medium of your choice.
Beginners and all levels are welcome. Art supplies will be provided, but please bring your own if you'd like.
After a 10-minute slideshow, we'll have the remaining time to focus on art.
While the event is primarily aimed at adults, those aged 12 and above are welcome with adult supervision.
You are welcome to bring food and drink for yourself or to share.
Space is limited so registration is required. Register at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sky-water-an-art-practice-workshop-tickets-1095510243629

Join us for Morning Meditation on the Waterfront Saturdays in September from 9 to 9:30 am near Luminescence (map). This program is presented by Meditation in Queens.
Morning Meditation Blue Sky Mind: Our root mind is naturally light, boundless and deeply peaceful. We imagine our mind is like the vast, clear blue sky and the mental busyness and painful emotions we experience are like clouds. Through training our mind, we allow these clouds to dissolve, revealing the boundless potential within. In just 30 minutes of meditation, we can shape the flow of our entire day. By connecting to our clear sky-link mind and intentionally cultivating inner peace, we can access the best of ourselves and learn to live from this place. While the meditations offered are Buddhist, they appeal to anyone seeking to cultivate a deeper state of inner peace and authentic happiness. No previous experience is necessary. Everyone Welcome.
Please bring a blanket or mat for sitting meditation. To register for this event please visit: https://checkout.meditationinnewyork.org/blue-sky-mind-queens-in-person/
