History and Resiliency tour of Hunter's Point South Park

For City of Water Day, we’re introducing our neighbors to the waterfront that has defined our community for centuries.

Hunters Point Parks Conservancy will lead a talk on our waterfront’s history followed by a walk through Hunter’s Point South Park. The presentation, which starts at the Queens Landing Boathouse, will cover the history of LIC’s wetlands and waterfront, from their uses by indigenous peoples including the Munsee Lenape, through the role of the waterways in moving goods during industrialization, ending on the challenges of building a residential community in a previously highly-industrialized neighborhood. The group will then move to the adjacent park for a walk that will focus on the park’s resilient features, including the wetlands, bioswales, riprap, and native plantings that help mitigate flooding and protect against storm surges, and will offer an overview of the benefits of green infrastructure when building resilient communities.
